BUILDING THE DC-8 PLANE

03 January 2015:

I continued puttying and sanding.

To make the joining region of the wings and fuselage, I first stretched sticky fabric tapes over the gap and started to apply polyester putty for filling.

04 January 2015:

I continued with puttying. I applied a slippery-surface masking tape over the door coverings so that spread putty would not stick to them.

11 January 2015:

Coming to the frontal joining part, I first cut a brass part for the contour completion. Then I filled its upper and lower parts with polyester putty. To make the part detachable, I had applied masking tape to prevent the putty from sticking.

12 January 2015:

I sanded the block to shape.

13 January 2015:
I took out the block.

18 January 2015:
I drilled a hole for the landing light recess, shaped the end of the hole semi-spherical for the reflector. Then I cut a slant piece from a styrene tube to serve as the frame/bezel.

21 January 2015:
I  sculpted the RHS joining of the fuselage with the wing root.

27 January 2015:
I finished joining the LHS joining of the fuselage with the wing root. Then I started filling the wings with foam. This will serve as the supporting base for the styrene sheets covering the wings.

07 February 2015:
I filled the wing with foam and sanded to rough shape.

09 February 2015:

I applied foam putty on the wings to make an even surface beneath the styrene sheets.

15 February 2015:
I glued sockets from styrene tube to house the screw heads that will fix the engine, then filled around with putty.

21 February 2015:

Meanwhile, I had prepared the development drawings for the wing panels. I printed the developments on sticky paper, cut and used them as templates for cutting the styrene sheets.

The leading edge end had a clash with the wing root on the fuselage, so I had to etch out some part to embed the styrene.

To fix the first part of the leading edge, I masked everywhere but the area where it would fit. I used Bison spray glue for the job.

I fixed the upper part, then carried on as above for the lower part.

The first part of the wing covering is done...
